PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Panos Boumis obtained his BSc in Physics in 1994 from the University of Patras. In 1997 he obtained his PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Manchester (U.K.) where he was also a demonstrator and tutor at the 1st year lab in Physics and Astronomy courses.

In 1997 he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the same University. From 1999 to 2002, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Foundation fro Research and Technology (FORTH) and a visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Crete. In 2002 he was elected as Assistant Researcher (Researcher Grade D’) at the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (IAA) of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), while in 2006 he got promoted to Associate Researcher (Researcher Grade C’) at IAA/EAA. In 2010 he was promoted to a Senior Researcher and in 2017 to the position of Research Director. He is Instrumentation Manager of the 2.3m ‘Aristarchos’ telescope and the 1.2m telescope at Kryoneri. He founded and he is the P.I. of the Optical and Electronics laboratories.

RESEARCH
INTERESTS

Observational Astrophysics, with emphasis in Galactic astronomy and to the design and development of scientific instruments for telescopes. Study of the latest stages of massive stars evolution as well as of the morphology and dynamics of the Interstellar Medium (ISM), through the Planetary Nebulae (PNe), Supernova Remnants (SNRs), Nebulae of Luminous Blue Variables Stars (LBVs). Study of exoplanets. Design, development and upgrade of scientific instruments, especially for the 2.3m ‘Aristarchos’ telescope.
