1) Postdoc position at NOA

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral research position at the National Observatory of Athens in the field of high energy extragalactic astronomy. Applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field by the starting date of the appointment.

Successful candidates are expected to join the main research activities of the X-ray group of the National Observatory of Athens on the characterisation of the X-ray populations in XMM and Chandra extragalactic surveys, the cosmological evolution of AGN and their obscuration properties, the relation between the formation of galaxies and the the growth of the supermassive black holes at their centres. 2) Postdoc position at UOA

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral research position in the area of computational high energy astrophysics at the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics of the University of Athens, Greece. Applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field by the starting date of the appointment.

The successful candidate is expected to work on simulations of the high energy spectra of AGN. A strong background on the physics of compact objects, AGN radiation processes and computational physics is desirable. The theoretical group at the Astrophysics & Astronomy Department of the University of Athens comprises three professors and several graduate students. Research is conducted in radiative transport and MHD of AGNs and GRBs. The appointment is part of a large programme that involves researchers at the National Observatory of Athens, University of Crete, MPE/Munich, CEA/Saclay, Bologna, Oxford and CfA/Harvard.

3) Postdoc position at UOC

Applications are invited for a 3-year postdoctoral research position in the area of infrared astronomy at the Astrophysics Group of the University of Crete (Greece). Applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field by the starting date of the appointment.

The successful candidate is expected to be self-motivated with experience in the modeling and interpretation of the Spectral Energy Distribution of extragalactic sources. A strong background in AGN physics and galaxy evolution is desirable. The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. V. Charmandaris and will have access to infrared data from major surveys carried out by Spitzer and Herschel. The appointment is part of a large programme that involves researchers at the National Observatory of Athens, University of Crete, MPE/Munich, CEA/Saclay, Bologna, Oxford and CfA/Harvard.

The Astrophysics Group in Crete currently consists of 7 faculty members as well as several postdocs, engineers, and graduate students. Over the years it has established close long-term collaborations with the infrared groups at CEA/Saclay (France) and SSC/Caltech (USA), the X-rays groups at MPE (Germany), Leicester Univ. (UK) and Univ. of Valencia (Spain), as well as with radio astronomy groups and MPIfr Bonn (Germany) and Caltech (USA). In the past 6 years the group hosted 10 postdoctoral researchers and has received over 2.5Meuros in funding through competitive proposals. The group also manages and operates the 1.3m telescope at the Skinakas Observatory. The instrumentation of the telescope includes a low-resolution spectrometer, a near-IR camera and the OPTIMA high-speed photo-polarimeter of MPE. A new polarimeter for monitoring blazars identified by Fermi is under construction in collaboration with Caltech (USA).
