Visiting Kalavryta
 
What to visit:
The Cave of the Lakes located on the way from Kalavrita to Klitoria at an altitude of 827m. It is 17 km from Kalavrita and 9 km from Klitoria. The lakes inside the cave are a unique geological phenomenon, not common internationally or elsewhere in Greece.
The funicular railway was realized by Harilaos Trikoupis. The project’s agreement was singed in 1889 and the construction terminated seven years later. French specialists designed the railway. It was a difficult project due to the inaccessible terrain. On March 10, 1896, the train made its first trip. The route begins in Diakofto, traverses the Vouraikos gorge, passes through the village of Zachlorou and ends in Kalavrita. The duration is around 1 hour.
The Monastery of Mega Spileon (built on a rock) where the miraculous icon of virgin Mary (one of the four icons painted by Apostle Loukas) made of wax and mastic is being kept (10km).
The Museum where there are among other things, a Gospel studded with diamonds, a gift of Catherine the Great, the skull of Saint Alexios, and the crozier and vestments of Bishop Yermanos.
The Monastery of Agia Lavra where the revolution of 1821 started. There you can admire the historical banner of the revolution and the heirlooms (5km).
The river Vouraikos. Flows through the mountains of Kalavrita, between the east side of Erimanthos and the west side of Helmos and runs through the west part of the Achaia prefecture, in a northern direction.

The river Ladonas is the main tributary of Alfeios river.

The waters of styx.

Kalavrita Ski Center situated on the North-Western slope of Helmos Mountain at the altitude of 1,700 m. (Xerokambos) and at the highest point of 2,340 m. (Neraidorachi). The Ski Center operates on every day basis during the winter season
(December to April) from 8:30 till 16:00.
