About Helmos

The Helmos Observatory is located in the North Peloponese on the mount Helmos (Aroania) at an altitude of 2340 m (22˚ 11' 46" East, 37˚ 59' 04" North). This astronomical station is 130 km (straight line distance) westward of Athens and about 15 km for the historic city of Kalavryta. The location of the site (Neraidorachi or fairy slope) was selected after careful examination and finally given the green light in March 1999. Being actually one of the darkest areas both in Greece and in Europe, it thus facilitates astronomical observation away from the light polluting sources.
